CLIO on McDowell

1418 E McDowell Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85006

  • CLIO on McDowell is a 9,000 sq. ft. historic retail center developed as a mixed-use property located along the Historic Miracle Mile District in Phoenix Arizona.

  • Originally built as a retail center in 1953, CLIO has now been restored to meet Phoenix’s growing needs. Named ‘CLIO’ after the Greek Goddess of History, the building has undergone a complete restoration of its historic features that emphasizes its unique character and plays a powerful role in the revitalization of Phoenix's first Commercial Historic District.

How did we engage the community?

When it came to honoring CLIO, we knew that incorporating the essence of the local community was essential. To achieve this, we decided to create public art pieces inspired by vintage ads of the neighborhood’s former businesses. These art pieces were skillfully crafted and thoughtfully designed to resonate with the community. Utilizing wheatpaste, we strategically placed these artworks onto the exterior of the property, ensuring visibility to a staggering 33,000 individuals. This bold move not only transformed the property visually but also sparked conversations among residents and visitors alike. We were thrilled to witness the positive reception these art pieces received, as they served as a bridge between the past and the present, connecting the community to their heritage and the rejuvenated property.
